Richard : Welcome back to com quick wins. I’m Richard Toutounji and today I’m talking about are you a marketer, or are you a manager? You see, today more than ever, we’re a consumer based focus that we love the new things. We love the new gadgets. We want to see what’s new in the marketplace.
Over the last 20 years we’ve been evolving with innovation, with education, with new products and service, and new technology. Let me give you an example.
In 1883, Coca-Cola pretty much started with their first product line. For 100 years, they only had 1 product. In 1983 they decided, “Let’s start putting a new product to market.” … And they got a new product. Now, they keep bringing out new lines. We’ve got Coca-Cola cherry, Coca-Cola lime, diet Coke, Coca-Cola vanilla. We’ve got a new one, Coca-cola life, that green coca-cola you see.
Why are they doing that … Because they’re engaging with a new type of client. They’re engaging with a healthier type of client for life. They’re engaging in clients that like a bit of taste in their Coca-Cola. Their re-innovating their product, their original product, so they stay current in the marketplace.
You’re always showcasing the best ways to explain the service offering that you have. You could be in business in 20 or 30 years, it doesn’t matter, but we all know that you’re gonna always do the product better than you did 20 years ago. You’re more experienced. There’s always ways to explain how you’re better, how you’re stronger, how your product or service is the best in the marketplace … And that’s what we call innovation. That’s what we call marketing.
My suggestion is if you’ve been sort of managing the business for some time it’s time to refocus the energy and go in to the marketing angle. Making sure that you can spend 80% of your time in marketing the product to new people, to new consumers, to new markets. To make sure that your business can consistently grow, consistently scale up, because if you stay in the operations role, if you stay in the manager, without having someone in marketing or with doing your old traditional marketing from the last 20 years, it means that your product is gonna start to get stale because consumers today are wanting the new things. They’re wanting the new products, services, and that’s what you need to make sure you keep marketing to those consumers.
The question today, are you a marketer or you are a manager? Today more than ever if you’ve even got a marketing team involved, are they marketing what they were doing 10 or 20 years ago, or are they understanding that they need to market those great new services that you have on your line, on your product line.
That’s what it’s about. It’s about engaging into the new market. Engaging into innovation market, and making sure that you are the leader in your industry. That you’re leading the industry. You’re coming up with the new technology, the new services, the new product offerings. For that, you need to be a marketer. You can either spend 80% of your time doing marketing and leading forward or you can avoid the whole topic of marketing, just stay in the business as a manager. If you choose to do that, make sure that you really dedicate a marketing arm in your team, and make sure they move your business, your company forward.
That’s today’s COM Quick Wins. I hope that starts getting your mind and thoughts working to see how can you innovate your product, your service even better than before because remember life cycles, now, are shorter. Every time you’ve got to bring out a new product, every 6 months, a new service, a new way to market it. I’ll leave you with that thought. Comment below. Let me know what your thoughts are and how we can help you and I look forward to seeing you next time on COM Quick Wins.
