On this episode of Industry Change, I speak with long time friend and meditation teacher, Tom Cronin. Tom traded his life as a finance broker to become a meditation teacher and has an incredible story. Interestingly he’s the first person who actually got me to sit in stillness for 20 minutes and I’ve now incorporated meditation into my daily life.
Tom started his career as a finance broker, when he applied for a job just before starting uni on a trading room floor. As soon as he stepped into it, he was hooked and ended up staying in the career for the next 26 years. But, after living the high life for 10 years, some of the wheels started to fall off and Tom suffered from some major anxiety and depression. That’s when he found meditation. Meditation helped him to cope with the everyday stress of his job (which he ended up staying in for the next 16 years) and relieved that sense of anxiety and depression that was building in his life.
Tom is now the founder of The Stillness Project, which has a lofty goal of inspiring a billion people to sit in silence. He is well on the way to achieving that with his new project, The Portal which is a movie, a book and an app that follows the story of 6 ordinary people who have suffered incredible trauma, and been able to cope through the power of mediation.
Tom, now teaches and advocates the benefits of mediation for everyday people in their daily life. With so much stress thrown at us each day, it can really create wear and tear on our well-being. Meditation helps to even out that balance again. Instead of living in a constant state of stress, meditation helps us to slow down, be calm and help us to sustain a level of balance and consistency in life. And you can do it in as little as 10 minutes twice a day.
